Cris Derksen
In her career as a cellist and composer Cris Derksen has taken the cello to new frontiers. She experiments with it – she uses it as a drum – she plays music boxes across the strings – she sets up a mic and runs the signal through an electronic loop station to create music that is quite unlike anything you’ve heard before.
She’s the kind of artist who is comfortable in the in-between spaces: straddling the classical music world and other genres. That fits who she is – she calls herself a “Creenonite” – half-Cree, half- Mennonite – and she’s been using her cello to explore her Indigenous heritage in a way that’s captured the attention of listeners and fans from across musical genres.
